Zoology - Animal Kingdom

About Zoology

Zoology is the scientific study of animals, their behavior, physiology, classification, and distribution. It encompasses everything from microscopic organisms to the largest mammals on Earth.

Our zoology program explores animal biology through both theoretical knowledge and practical fieldwork. Students learn about animal anatomy, genetics, evolution, ecology, and conservation biology.

Key areas of study include:

  • Animal Physiology and Anatomy
  • Wildlife Conservation
  • Entomology and Parasitology
  • Ornithology (Bird Studies)
  • Marine Biology
  • Animal Behavior and Ecology

The field combines laboratory research with field studies, providing students with comprehensive understanding of the animal kingdom and our role in preserving biodiversity.

Our Zoology Faculty

Dr. Irfan Ahmad Wani

Professor of Wildlife Biology & Conservation

With over 15 years of experience in wildlife conservation, Dr. Wani specializes in large mammal ecology and habitat preservation. His research focuses on human-wildlife conflict resolution and endangered species protection in fragile ecosystems.

He has published extensively in international journals and leads conservation projects across South Asia, working closely with local communities to develop sustainable wildlife management practices.

Dr. Rafiqa Bashir

Professor of Ornithology & Avian Ecology

Dr. Bashir is a renowned ornithologist with expertise in migratory bird patterns and avian behavior. Her groundbreaking research on bird migration routes has contributed significantly to understanding climate change impacts on avian populations.

She established the university's Bird Observatory and leads annual bird banding programs, training students in field ornithology techniques and conservation strategies.

Dr. Tariq Hussain Rather

Professor of Entomology & Parasitology

Specializing in insect ecology and parasitic organisms, Dr. Rather's work bridges entomology and public health. His research on vector-borne diseases has informed national health policies and control programs.

He manages the university's extensive insect collection and conducts field research on beneficial insects, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices and integrated pest management.

Important Information

Field Work Requirements: All zoology students participate in mandatory field expeditions to wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, and marine research stations.

Laboratory Safety: Proper safety protocols must be followed when handling biological specimens, chemicals, and live animals in laboratory settings.

Research Opportunities: Students have access to ongoing research projects in wildlife conservation, animal behavior studies, and ecological surveys.

Career Paths: Graduates can pursue careers in wildlife management, veterinary sciences, environmental consulting, zoological parks, and academic research.

Equipment: Field kits containing binoculars, field guides, measuring equipment, and data recording tools are provided for practical sessions.
